Why Theatre XL: On representation, stereotyping and typecasting in theatre and performance
The discussion about inclusivity in theatre and performance has gained priority but the main focus seems to be numbers: as long as we see more people of colour on stage, the Dutch theatre will become more diverse. Eventhough this goal is desirable itself, the inequality is not only visible in the scarcity of people of colour in the performing arts, it is also represented in the type of roles that are being offered to them en how they are being directed. That's why we are opening up the discussion about representation, typecasting and stereotypes. What are the destructive clichés that have become commonalities in the contemporary media landscape? Which effect has a biased or partial portrayal of people of colour on our ideas about equality and equivalence? And how can you tackle these problems on the floor with an active approach, as an actor and as a maker, as a white and a black artist, as a professional of Dutch or non-Dutch origin?
After an introduction on the topic by dr. Sruti Bala, a panel discussion will be held with Marc van Bree (Kemna Casting), Ghieslaine Guardiola (actrice and presentator)
The serie 'Why Theatre' is co-organised with the faculty of Theatre Studies of Utrecht University
