The seminar marks the launch of the special issue of the Dutch journal of Gender Studies (Tijdschrift voor Genderstudies) on Decolonising the University (eds. Sara de Jong; Rosalba Icaza; Rolando Vázquez; Sophie Withaeckx, Vol. 20, No. 3).
The decolonising movement at the University of Amsterdam – and at other universities around the world – has shown us that a deeper understanding of diversity issues is needed. What exactly is wrong with curricula? How to change classroom dynamics to make more students feel at home? How to recognise the ‘coloniality’ of power and gender at work in the academy and to adapt university policies in order to realise inclusion and equality?
These questions seem to draw new voices that claim their part in the choir of academia. What can be done to stimulate these voices to take their rightful place in the dialogue about the future of universities?
The seminar will be held at De Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, room HG-05A37.
